Before You Go (11)

As soon as you have booked a flight you should book a hotel within your budget range.

Booking with a global OTA (online travel agent) will allow you to amend dates or cancel up to a few days before your arrival.

Unless you have stayed at a hotel before or it has come very highly recommend we suggest that you use an OTA (online travel agent).

We suggest Agoda, Booking(.com) or Expedia. A great reason for using any of these is an unknown fact and one that is not advertised. These OTA’s have accessible offices in Siem Reap and should something go wrong with a booking they are without doubt the most helpful people you could meet. In my experience as a hotelier and traveler this is very, very rare.

Dealing direct with a hotel will involve numerous emails and the potential of misunderstanding. Studies have shown it takes on average, 7 emails to confirm a direct booking. In addition to this hard work, hotels in SR and PP (and everywhere) often change owners and records are lost as are deposits.

Booking a flight to Cambodia is the very first step you should take. You will be able to choose a date and time that suits your personal circumstances and not that of an agency or charity.

If possible book a code share flight so that you do not need to exit and enter immigration wherever your Asian hub stop is.

The most regularly used currency in Cambodia is the USD. Only take $1, 5$, $10 and $20 for spending. Ensure that they are in good order with nothing written on them or even the slightest blemish or tear – they will not be accepted.

$100 bills should only be used to pay for your hotel or a donation to the charity.

If you want to use Cambodian Riel, it is available everywhere.

An extra bit of advice. Cash machines dispense USD. When using a cash machine always take an amount that is not an exact $100. IE: $90 or $190 etc. THis means that you will have smaller denominations. Do not expect a small bar to change large bills or a tuk tuk driver to have change of any description!

Our team in Cambodia (both Khmer and foreigners) are continually on the look out for deserving causes. We either approach the charity or make inquiries about their legitimacy. If we are satisfied that they are a bone fide charity we will then include them on our website. So that there is no doubt or confusion – we never accept any payment from a charity.

We ask the charity what their requirements are and how best volunteers can help; we add their requirments to their contact form.

When you complete the contact form on a charity page, the information goes direct to the charity.

There are many people who you could consider contacting before you leave via; email, Skype or social media app.

  1. Charity
  2. Hotel
  3. Voluntouring Abroad staff
  4. Other volunteers
  5. Social media groups

It is all about being comfortable and feeling safe. However; our suggestion is that if you have questions you make a list and keep it brief.

Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival, which we believe to be the most straightforward. Online application are not recommended unless you are from the following countries Afghanistan, Algeria, Arab Saudi, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Nigeria.

Turn up at the airport with

  1. A passport that is valid for at least 12 months (they say 6 months but why take a chance)
  2. 2 passport photos
  3. Fee of $35 in $USD. Always take extra small denominations for additional fees. IE; you have wrong type of passport photo.
  4. Apply for an E-Visa as this can be extended. This is not to be confused with applying for an online visa

No matter how long you intend to stay in Cambodia you will be given a 30 day visa. Should you wish to extend your visa we have contacts in the Kingdom who can arrange this for you. A tourist visa cannot be extended. However, you can easily leave the country and return.

We do not recommend land crossings unless you are a seasoned traveler.

That will depend on what you have volunteered for.

Make sure that your skills are suitable and that you are capable of offering the charity what they require. ASK THEM. Remember, you are not there to study – you are their to contribute your skills.

You might want to consider that your visit is simply a fact finding mission to find a charity to which you can make donations. It is quite possible that it would make more sense to organise charitable donations and funding from your home country.

We believe that this is a reasonable request. Most previous volunteers will be happy to share their experiences (good or bad) with you. If a charity is unable or unwilling to make this connection for you please let us know.

You may find reviews on the charity’s website or volunteer blogs about the charity.

We would suggest that you avoid this at all costs. Being in a jail in a foreign country is never good. Do not assume that your country’s representative will drop what they are doing to come to your assistance.

Most of your Khmer acquaintances will try to avoid contact with the authorities; so do not expect them to be front and centre of any help that you need.

Find your embassy and keep a note of it in your passport. There are only 29 representatives in the Kingdom, so you will need to find out who will give you assistance.

We are not asking you to send us money (although it would be appreciated). What we want from you is to enjoy the information in our website and find the content useful. Our commitment to you

We want to ensure that you gain something by visiting our platform and using the information we have gained over many years working abroad and travelling overseas.

If there is something we missed ask us some questions and we will do our best to satisfy your need for knowledge and information about volunteering abroad. With our particular emphasis on Cambodian charities we are second to none in sourcing information about the Kingdom. You can take a shortcut to the website content by visiting our frequently asked questions page.

Our most important sections are probably our planning a volunteer project abroad or how to choose a charity. If you need to know more about us we are quite prepared to speak to you directly.

This is the best way for YOU to donate to any charity in the world.

What will a donation cost you?

To “donate” to us will cost you absolutely zero. WE do not charge fees or commissions of any description to those who want to volunteer abroad or to the charities that appear on the voluntouring website. We fund our missions by allowing advertising (where appropriate) that we believe will be useful to ANYONE planning a trip overseas – for any reason. The prices to anyone using our links are exactly the same as the prices you would pay these brands directly or through 3rd parties. However; when you use our website we will receive a commission which goes to maintaining the voluntouring website or directly to our fish farming charity in Battambang.

We say again: It will cost you Nothing, Zero,

Not a Penny to help us achieve our mission.

Does the purpose of your trip matter?

It matters not a jot if you are travelling for a holiday, visiting Angkor Wat, business or to take part in a charitable project abroad. If it involves travel and accommodation, our charities can benefit from your choice to use our website to complete your travel plans and bookings. Every booking will contribute to a Cambodian charity. Just as an example; a 2 week stay in a hotel could buy 800+ fish fry for our fish farm project – that is 800 family meals. A holiday for a group of 4 would pay for an administrator in Siem Reap or Battambang for 1 month. You book a holiday and we employ someone!

How does it feel to fly with the best ?

Flights | Skyscanner

Our information about flights holds good for most destinations. Almost all flights are operated through a GDS system of one description or another. We suggest Skyscanner; however, as we bring on more advertisers we will give you more options. Our advice is always to book your flight first; there are more hotel rooms available than there are flights.

Accommodation | Online Travel Agents

As someone who worked in the hospitality industry, I believe that you might as well opt for one of the top 3 online travel agents (OTA). Visit our information page on the secrets of how to book a great hotel room. Our information is particularly relevant if you are booking accommodation in Siem Reap. However much of the advice stands good for any location. Unlike the accommodation aggregators you see on the TV, the big 3 OTA’s have some influence on the hotels they advertise.

Booking.com

Their tried and trusted model is to book your accommodation today and pay on arrival (or departure). Which is good if you want to guarantee a great room, but do not want to fork out a lump of cash. They have a sophisticated yet easy to use filter tool to help you get the exact hotel you want.

Booking.com

Agoda

Their booking model is pay now, which is great if you want to get the expense out of the way and focus on spending money. They have a no nonsense refund guarantee. If you have a problem with a hotel they are quite aggressive in obtaining a refund for you. They do this by simply paying (or not) the hotel once you have checked out at the end of your stay. If you complain before the end of your stay they do not pay the hotel. The hotel is not prepaid – it is kept in escrow. Far safer than paying a hotel in advance.

Expedia

Their booking process focuses on the whole shebang; flight, hotel and car hire. Another great way of paying for the biggest expense and focusing on spending money. As with Agoda any payment made to them is held in escrow until you check out. We will donate the commission received to our charitable work in Cambodia

Travel Insurance | World Nomads

We believe that travel insurance is essential. by the by even if you do not use our recommendation; invest in travel insurance. All to often you will hear horror stories of travellers who though it was not really required. Our choice of travel insurance is World Nomad as we believe they understand the independent traveler and those who are on volunteering missions.

Airport Lounges

Using airport lounges are a great way to start or end a journey. Get yourself and your group away from the hustle bustle of the main airport concourse. Less queues means less hassle. Whilst you are enjoying complimentary drinks and snacks you are actually making a donation to our mission and charity. How cool is it to donate to charity by relaxing. A win/win situation for everyone!

Meet And Greet and Lounges

How cool would it be to be met at the airport and be whisked through immigration? Or relax and enjoy First Class service instead of the manic conditions in some airports? YOU DESERVE IT. It is a lot cheaper than you might think.
